Building a Home Gym on Sale: What to Buy First and When
Home gym gear goes on sale at predictable times. Here's what to buy first, what to buy used and when prices drop the most.
Where to buy on sale

I built my home gym slowly, mostly on sale and partly secondhand. It saved me a lot of money compared with buying everything at once. Here's my order.
Step 1: Adjustable dumbbells or a set of basics
Adjustable dumbbells save space and replace a whole rack. Fixed dumbbells are durable and simple. Start with the weights you'll use most.
Step 2: A sturdy bench
An adjustable bench lets you do presses, rows and many other exercises. Check weight capacity and stability.
Step 3: Resistance bands and a mat
Cheap and versatile. Great for warmups and mobility work.
Step 4: Rack and barbell (optional)
If you want to squat and bench heavy, a rack with safeties is essential. It's a bigger investment and needs space.
When to buy
- **January:** fitness gear is in high demand. Deals exist, but prices can be higher.
- **Late spring and summer:** demand drops and sales appear.
- **Black Friday:** solid deals on fitness equipment.
Buy used
Weights don't wear out. Used dumbbells and plates are often much cheaper. Check for rust and damage.
Avoid
- Cheap benches with low weight limits
- Gimmicky machines that do one exercise
- Overbuying gear before building a habit
Space planning
Measure your space. Leave room for movement and safety.
Where to buy
Dick's Sporting Goods has a big selection of home gym gear, frequent sales and the option to see benches and racks in person before you commit floor space. Amazon offers a wide range with delivery, which matters a lot when the box weighs 80 pounds.
Verdict
Start with dumbbells and a bench, buy used when you can and wait for sales outside January.
