Rain Jackets: What \"Waterproof\" and \"Breathable\" Actually Mean on the Tag
Rain jacket labels are full of numbers and jargon. I've been soaked by \"waterproof\" jackets and stayed dry in cheap ones. Here's how to read the tag and buy the right one on sale.

I've been soaked by a "waterproof" jacket on a hike and stayed perfectly dry in a cheap shell on a city run. The labels on rain jackets are confusing on purpose. Here's what they mean and what to actually look for.
Water-resistant vs waterproof
- **Water-resistant** jackets handle drizzle and short showers. Water eventually soaks through.
- **Waterproof** jackets use a membrane or coating that stops water under pressure, like steady rain or a backpack strap pressing on your shoulders.
If you hike or commute in real rain, you want waterproof.
The numbers on the tag
Some brands list a waterproof rating in millimeters, like 10,000 mm or 20,000 mm. Higher means more resistant to water pressure. Around 10,000 mm handles typical rain. Higher ratings are for heavy, prolonged storms.
Breathability is sometimes listed in grams, for how much moisture vapor passes through per day. Higher is better if you'll be active.
Why you got wet anyway
Usually one of three reasons:
1. **Sweat.** A non-breathable jacket traps it, and you get wet from the inside. 2. **Seams.** Unsealed seams leak. Look for "fully taped" or "sealed seams." 3. **Worn-out water repellent coating.** The outer fabric "wets out" and stops breathing, so it feels like it's leaking.
Features worth paying for
- **Adjustable hood** that moves with your head and has a brim
- **Pit zips** for ventilation on climbs
- **Sealed seams**
- **Pockets placed above a backpack hip belt**
Fit
Leave room for a fleece underneath. Raise your arms. If your wrists pop out of the sleeves, size up or try another brand.
Care that restores performance
Wash your jacket with a technical cleaner and reapply a water-repellent treatment once or twice a season. Regular detergent and fabric softener clog the membrane. A gentle tumble dry on low heat can help reactivate the coating; check the care label first.
When to buy
Rain gear goes on sale at the end of spring and in late summer. Outgoing colors are often heavily discounted.
Where to buy
Nike and adidas offer lightweight rain jackets for running and training, good for city use. Dick's Sporting Goods carries outdoor brands with fully waterproof shells for hiking. Amazon has the widest range of prices, but check that the listing mentions sealed seams and a real waterproof rating.
Verdict
For hiking, buy a waterproof, breathable jacket with sealed seams and pit zips. Maintain the coating, size it for layers and buy at the end of the season.
